Denia

As one of the larger towns on the Northern Costa Blanca, Denia has much to offer. Placed at the foot of the Montgó Mountain, with the waters of the Mediterranean stretched before it, around 20km of beautiful beaches, heritage and fantastic beauty spots. What more could you be looking for?

Denia is a typical Spanish town with all the aspects you would expect to find. It is alive all year round. If you take the time to walk around Denia you must visit the remains of the castle. As you would expect with a castle, it is situated on a hill facing the sea but right in the heart of the city. Originally designed in the Islamic period between the 11th and 12th centuries, it has been renovated over the years, which is reflected in the architecture.

Being one of closest harbours to Ibiza and the Balaeric Islands from mainland Spain it is no co-incidence that Denia’s yacht club and marinas are the best in this part of Spain. Perfect if you are a boating enthusiast and if you aren’t the marinas are great for strolling around and sampling its many excellent restaurants.

When it comes to eating in Denia the choice is amazing, from small tapas bars to five star restaurants. It is worth just wandering into the one that takes your fancy to see what they have to offer and enjoy the atmosphere. The Spanish tend to eat late in the evening, but you will know when they start to arrive as the noise level will increase significantly. Denia has quite a few quirky Spanish bars that offer good food at reasonable prices. Look out for the Menu del Día, usually a 3 course meal with a drink at a reasonable price.

One of the main fiestas of Denia is the ‘Fallas’ which is held in March every year. Throughout the year the Spanish build effigies from wood and papier mache, generally relating to the national and local political issues of the year. These effigies are placed around the town for viewing and admiration. On the night of the 19th the effigies are set alight in honour of San José the patron saint of carpenters. Well worth a visit, but don’t stand too close. As with other towns, Moros y Cristianos and any of the other fiestas in the town are a joy to see.

A short drive out of Denia and you will find the fabulous 18 and 9 hole golf courses of La Sella with it’s hotel and spa making it one of the best golfing centres in Europe. A little further up the coast will take you to Oliva Nova, another excellent golf complex with a hotel and spa.

So, if you are looking at property in Denia what do you buy? Well if you want to be in town at the heart of it all, you will probably be looking at an apartment or townhouse. Denia offers a wealth of apartments from the old traditional Spanish style to the new and modern. Alternatively, if you are looking for the quieter side of life with a short trip to the action, you could consider a bungalow or villa situated slightly outside the main town.
