The charming town of Javea (or Xabia in the local Valenciano language) lies between the two headlands of San Antonio and La Nao, midway between Valencia and Alicante. There are three distinct parts of the town, The Old Town with its quaint narrow streets and ancient squares; a fascinating Port (overlooked by a narrow row of ancient , now abandoned windmills) . Then there is the Arenal which is the Town's main, safe, sheltered, sandy beach area. Watching over these areas is the spectacular Montgo mountain, shaped like an elephant which changes colour dramatically in the different lights and weathers. Montgo seems to protect the whole area ensuring the winter months are mild and the summers not too hot.
Nearby, still in Javea, there are lovely small unspoilt coves and beaches such as Grenadella and also Portichol with its very pretty island and bay, both ideal for swimming and snorkelling.
The Old Town retains many of its medieval architectural features with arched entrances, large gothic windows and beautiful wrought iron grilles. Small shops are hidden away from the glare of the sun, with interiors cool and inviting as you enter. There are many tapas bars and restaurants all offering good quality fare at reasonable prices. At the centre of the Old Town, San Bartolome Church contains the heart and soul of Javea. Part of it dates back as far as 1244 when King Jaime defeated the Moors there. Next door is the indoor market, well worth a visit for fresh fruit, meat and vegetables. In this area the property is mainly large, older style apartments and town houses. All are within walking distance to amenities.
The Port, has a very distinctive character, very different from the Old Town. It is a thriving fishing port and is one of the most important on the Costa Blanca. The harbour shelters the Club Nautico with cruisers and yachts of all sizes, as well as the pride of Javea's fishing fleet. Take a walk into the harbour in the very early morning or late afternoon to see the fishing boats leaving for their work and then returning with the catch. The Marina Espanola, a pedestrian precinct facing the sea is a lovely spot with many bars and restaurants. Away from the traffic and with fabulous views of the Cabo San Antonio to the left and the Cabo de San Martin to the right. The properties in this area are mainly apartments and penthouse suites.
Shaped like a horse shoe with the Parador Hotel on the left and the Cabo de San Martin on the right this sandy beach area offers safe and calm waters to swim and play in. There are numerous bars and restaurants offering every type of fare. Whether you are looking for a fabulous sea food extravaganza or good value simple “Menu del Dia”,it is all there. There are also shops to while away your time, all within walking distance. During the summer months there is an artisan night market along the promenade. There is also a huge cinema screen showing the latest film releases (in Spanish) free of charge. The properties in this area are again mainly apartments.
All areas of Javea are full with shops, restaurants and bars. Whether you stop for a while along the front to relax with sangria and enjoy the view, or in a side street with a coffee taking a break from the shopping, you will see plenty of life. Whichever area you choose to live in, we can offer you a wide selection of property to suit your needs.
On the outskirts of Javea you will find a very popular Golf Club with 9 holes. Club and trolley rental are available. After playing you can enjoy the delights of the club house and popular restaurant.
There are 2 private International Schools in Javea, both with very good reputations. They offer GCSE and A level qualifications, with lessons being held in English. These are in addition to the local Spanish schools, also with good reputations and offering a high level of education.
Market day is Thursday, with the market being held on the edge of the old town. Stalls have a mixture of fruit and vegetables, along with clothes, trinkets, handbags and a selection of gift items. Even if you don’t want to buy, pay a visit just to appreciate the atmosphere and see the sellers in action.
Like property in most Spanish towns, you will find mainly apartments and townhouses close to the beach and within the main town. However, in Javea there are also a number of bungalows and small villas within a short distance of beach. On the outskirts of the town, you will find the larger bungalows and villas. Close enough to reach amenities without too much stress, but enjoying the peace and tranquility.
